YouTube is conducting a new experiment by presenting a feature they call "Playables". Revealed in the "YouTube test features and experiments" thread on the Google Support page, this feature allows YouTube users to play a number of games directly, both in applications and websites opened via a browser on a computer or laptop. "We started testing a new experience on YouTube called “Playables”. Playables are games that can be played directly on YouTube on desktop and mobile devices," wrote the description in the thread.
The existence of Playables on YouTube was actually first reported earlier this year, as a “product for playing online games”. At that time only few details were available, because it was only tested for their internal employees. However, this feature can only be accessed by a limited number of users as a trial. Users who take part in the experiment will see a Playables section that will appear alongside other content in their home feed. Users can view and control the Playables history and progress of the games they play later which will be saved in their account's YouTube History.
Unfortunately, neither Google nor YouTube provide further details about what types of games are included in the Playables program this time. Like whether we'll see more advanced titles than what GameSnacks offers or how interested game developers can get involved. YouTube plans to continue offering Playables until March 28, 2024, after which the company will assess its performance and make a decision about its future. If Playables proves popular, it could become a permanent feature on the platform.
